ABSTRACT

The Formation of the Subjectivity of the Bisexual/Woman

and Its Challenges

Since 2000, the subject of bisexuality has been represented in the media and informal discourse surrounding the subject started to burst out. However, there has been no serious attention given to the subject in scholarship of sexuality in South Korea, as bisexuality is often simply regarded as a sexual behavior for a temporal time being. This research focus on the process of the building of the identity of the bisexual/woman in South Korean society and examines what implication the subjectivity of the bisexual/woman has on the normative discourse of sexuality and sexual politics in South Korea.

Although the alternative sexual discourse, having taken place since 1990 in South Korea, has critically inquired into the patriarchal sexual culture, it resulted in reinforcing heterosexual/male oriented social order by perceiving the boundary of homosexual and heterosexual identity as fixed. Feminism that has dealt with sexuality based on heterosexual practice has unknowingly naturalized heterosexuality and reinforced the boundary between heterosexuality and homosexuality by not being able to go beyond the notion that sexual orientation is fixed.

Based on the postmodern theory of sexuality such as queer-feminism, this study pays attention to the life story of those who think her gender identity does not neatly fit into the normative binary of man/woman or masculinity/femininity. Also these interviewees refuse to categorize their sexual practice and experience into the binary of homosexual and heterosexual. Twelve bisexual women were interviewed between March and July 2009 and the life story text was reorganized and analyzed thoroughly.

Crossing the border of genders and sexual identities throughout life, the interviewees have formed a transversal subjectivity of the bisexual/woman. The bisexual/woman by desiring both woman and man makes the boundaries of binary sexuality of homosexuality and heterosexuality ambiguous; they also blur the boundaries of man/woman as well as masculinity/femininity that have been regarded as the foundation that defines what is homosexuality or heterosexuality.

Thus, the experience of the bisexual/woman reveals how sexualization and hetero-sexualization are enforced in everyday life in the heterosexual/man dominated society. Particularly, life stories of the interviewees show that as long as patriarchal family culture of South Korean society heavily influence the life experience and self-story telling of these subjects the concept of the liberal sexual subjectivity cannot well explain the process of subjectivity formation of the bisexual/woman. The life stories of the interviewees show that patriarchal family culture and heterosexual/man-oriented culture has to be examined in order to understand the process of formation of any sexual subject in South Korea. It tells that sexualization and hetero/sexualization are co-working, and hierarchy of genders and that of sexuality are intertwined with one another.

Besides, the interviewees show that the subjectivity of the bisexual/woman emerges through various life strategies and negotiations according to their ages, social classes, different experiences in relationships, and so on.

Thus, various subjectivities of the bisexual/woman emerges through not only different experiences of crossing boundaries of genders and that of sexualities but also through various life strategies taken according to different social positions and locations; they are multi-layered, fluid, and open and thus irreducible to a single subjectivity.

The subject of the bisexual/woman suggests that it is no longer valid to perceive relation between woman and man, femininity and masculinity, and heterosexuality and homosexuality in a dichotomous epistemology; it also suggests that there is no natural or essential relation between gender and sexuality. This leads to the conclusion that such a binary perception is an ideology that works ultimately for the heterosexual/man. In other words, the subject of the bisexual/woman reveals that the boundary of sex and gender as well as sexuality is not actually consistent, normative, or fixed but is made to be looked in that way in favor of the heterosexual/man oriented social order.
