본 논문은 핸드폰을 사용하는 현대인들의 일상이 어떻게 재구조화되고 있는가에 대한 연구이다. 한국 사회에선 최근 2-3년 사이 핸드폰이 급속하게 대중화되면서 핸드폰이 개인의 일상에서 빼놓을 수 없는 필수품이 되었다. 이러한 핸드폰은 개인적 소유물이라는 점과 이동성을 지니고 있는 커뮤니케이션 수단이라는 특징을 갖는다. 이제 사람들은 시간과 공간적 제약을 벗어나 언제 어디서나 타인과 연결되고 정보를 주고 받게 되었다. 이 연구에서 주목하고자 하는 것은 바로 사람들이 이러한 제약에서 벗어남으로써 공적인 것과 사적인 것들이 충돌하고 그 경계가 모호해지는 현상들이다. 핸드폰으로 인해 개인의 사적인 대화들이 공적인 공간에 진입하고 있으며 가정과 같은 사적인 공간에선 핸드폰으로 연결된 타인이 가족들보다 더 중요한 부분을 차지하기도 한다. 이러한 일상의 변화들은 핸드폰에 대한 경제적, 기술적 분석들에 의해 쉽게 포착되지 않는다. 따라서 이를 위해 핸드폰을 사용하는 개인들에 대한 심층 인터뷰와 버스와 지하철, 커피숍 등의 공적 공간들에 대한 공간관찰을 수행하였다. 인터뷰 대상자는 핸드폰에 대한 공통된 관심을 가지고 모인 온라인 동호회의 사람들부터 핸드폰을 일반적인 용도로 사용하는 일반인들에 이르는 다양한 사람들로 구성하였다.//일상 생활에서 핸드폰은 유일한 커뮤니케이션 수단은 아니다. 인터넷, 메신저, 이메일, PDA등 다양한 커뮤니케이션 수단들이 다양하게 활용되고 있다. 그러나 이 중에서도 핸드폰은 그 어떤 매체보다 신체와 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 따라서 가정 내에서도 항상 개인이 소유하고 있는 핸드폰은 이미 ‘집전화’를 대체하였다. 개인이 가정 내에 머물면서도 이제 핸드폰을 통해 그 외부세계 그리고 타인과 더 직접적으로 연결된다. 가족들이 같은 공간에 있다고 해도 이미 가족들 사이엔 더 세밀한 정서상의 구획이 만들어지고 있는 것이다. 또한 사람들은 핸드폰을 끊임없이 만지작거리고 제대로 작동되지 않을 경우 불안해 한다. 핸드폰을 커뮤니케이션 수단으로서 활용하는 것 뿐만 아니라 오히려 핸드폰 자체에 대한 감정적 유대감을 갖게 된다. 핸드폰은 사용자에게 있어 단순한 기계가 아니라 오히려 통화 상대보다 더 가까운 친구나 애완동물과 같은 존재가 되는 것이다. 이러한 감정의 ''기계화''는 기계에 대한 종속이라기보다 핸드폰이라는 사물을 통해 일상을 의미 있게 구성해내려는 실천의 하나로 볼 수 있다. //공적인 장소에서 타인의 사적인 대화를 듣고 말하는 현상은 핸드폰에 의해 점점 증가하고 있다. 이 때 사적인 대화들이란 통화 내용 뿐만 아니라 개인들이 핸드폰을 사용하는 몸짓과 표정 그리고 시선 등이 결합된 하나의 이미지를 말한다. 많은 연구자들은 이러한 현상에 대해 사적인 대화가 비생산적이며 따라서 공적인 가치를 파괴하는 낯설고 불쾌한 것으로 여긴다. 그러나 핸드폰은 자신과 ''무관한'' 사람들과 머물고 있는 공간을 벗어나 개인으로 하여금 실제 자신과 소통할 수 있는 상대와 연결시켜 준다. 이들은 자신을 타인의 존재 자체가 불러일으키는 ''불안''에 대한 방어기제로 핸드폰을 사용하기도 하며 ''과시적 통화''를 통해 자아를 재현하는 방식들을 고안해 내기도 한다. 또한 공적인 공간에 머물면서도 타인과의 끊임없는 상호작용을 통해 시간을 세분화하며 현재의 순간 순간을 활용한다. 또한 사람들은 자신의 사적인 대화를 발화하는 것 뿐만 아니라 의도하지 않았음에도 불구하고 타인의 사적인 대화를 듣게 된다. 모자이크와 같은 연관성 없는 무수한 대화들이 개인을 둘러싼 가청 공간에 흘러다닌다. 어떤 사람들은 이러한 대화들에 전혀 무관심하거나 불쾌해하기도 한다. 그러나 이러한 타인들 사이에 직접적인 대화가 이루어지지는 않더라도 이들 간의 순간적인 연결성, 비연속적인 관계성들은 분명 대화가 부재하지는 않음을 보여준다. 또한 이러한 모든 대화들은 개인의 일상 속에서 나름대로의 연속성을 가지며 어떤 파괴의 힘도 갖고 있지 않다. / 

[영문]This is a study of the reconstruction of everyday life through mobile phones in Korean society. Mobile phones, which have become increasingly popular within the past 2-3 years, have become a necessity of life. Mobile phones are a personal and mobile form of communication. Through them, people can connect with other people and get information anytime and anywhere. This study focuses on the collision and blurring of boundaries between public and private spaces because of mobile phones. Through mobile phones, private conversations penetrate into the public sphere and conversations on mobile phones take precedence so that people connected through the mobile phone can become more important than family members present at home. These changes cannot be easily understood from either commercial or technological points of view. Therefore, in-depth interviews and observation of public spaces such as subways and coffee shops were conducted. Interviewees consisted of ordinary people as well as mobile phone manias.//There are various means of communication such as the Internet, Internet messenger services, e-mail and PDAs. Among them, mobile phones are the most connected to the human body. Individuals constantly tinker with their mobile phones and feel uneasy when they break down. Many people consider mobile phones to be more than a mere means of communication. Some treat theirs like a close friend or a pet. This mechanization of emotions does not indicate a dependency on machines but shows how mobile phones play a crucial role in creating and maintaining everyday life. //It is also becoming more common to both carry on and hear private conversations within public spaces because of mobile phones. In addition to contents, private conversations also include such things as a speaker’s gestures and facial expressions that compose an image. Many researchers have tended to view this phenomenon negatively, considering it both anti-social and unproductive. However, hand phones enable individuals to connect with other individuals, serve as a defense against the anxiety of being with other people, allow individuals to express themselves through visible communication and divide and utilize each moment efficiently through endless communication with other people. Whether people intend it or not, people also get to not only carry on but also listen to other people’s conversations. Individuals become surrounded by an infinite number of conversations that are like an unconnected mosaic. While some people are indifferent, others may get angry at this intrusion of private conversations into public life. However, what these conversations, in fact, show is that even though there may not be not be any direct communication, there is communication going on and that these conversations possess their own continuity within everyday life. //This research is important in demonstrating how the use of hand-phones within everyday life are constructing new habits and forms of consciousness as well as reconstructing the boundaries between public and private spaces./
